Mentoring programme for Malahide and Swords Camera Clubs
What is the programme? It is a year long guided process to creating your own photographic project. Tim Durham will facilitate a group interested in learning how to work through a process to create a significant photographic work. This process is about your photography process. To some degree the learning will be lead by participants. The programme is not about emulating the teacher or any photographer. It is about discovering your own photographic voice. There will be monthly talks by Tim on a variety of photographic topics, showing of your work-to-date, and feedback from Tim and the group. You will explore who your influences are, and learn how to talk about your photographs and projects.
What can your photographic subjects be? Your project may be about anything: things, events, places or concepts. Examples could include family recipes, home, nostalgia, a life lived, troubles, beauty, landscape, seascape, work, birds, architecture, gardens or even giant vegetables. Anything.
How can your project be presented? The final expression of your project may be a portfolio box, a book, a scrapbook, images on plates, an audio-visual, an exhibition or even a single image. To mark the end of the year of learning, you will present your project. Who you present to is your choice as the creator. It could be to your Camera Club, to a friend, to your family, to any group. All this is to be discussed and worked through.
When and where will the programme take place? Tim will meet participants on a monthly basis starting on Saturday October 22. The majority of monthly meetings are planned to take place in the Malahide Catholic Parish Centre, however the group may also meet at a photographic exhibition in Dublin. Every quarter we will meet in Westmeath at Tim’s home.
Who can participate? Participants can be at any photographic level, from having just started photographing to having decades of experience. You will need a desire to grow as a photographer. There will be Becket moments of ‘Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.’. Stretch and occasional mild stress should be anticipated. However, you will be supported. There will be no need to have an idea fully formed when you start, but if you have one then that’s fine too.
Cost: €600 for the year. Additional costs will be your own printing, presentation, transport, exhibition entry, etc.
Group size: Maximum 10
